DECEMBER STUDENT SCHOLAR
We congratulate our December essay scholarship winner, Jada Lee! Her introspective painting and written piece depict her beautiful journey of reflection and mindfulness, ultimately pushing her journey towards self-love.
Every month, we release a new essay prompt for students to win a $200 scholarship, graciously sponsored by our Hurley ohana. In light of the new year, we focused our December prompt on introspection.
To encourage others to learn from 2022’s challenges, we asked our scholar community to share an experience in 2022 that had a significant impact on them, shifting their perspective as they approach 2023. Additionally, our prompt instructed applicants to pair their written response with a creative piece that encapsulated their story.
Senior, Jada Lee, beautifully interpreted the prompt as a means to share her journey of self-acceptance. Her painting, pictured above, symbolizes herself drowning in her own expectations to then rising above the overwhelming waters that once consumed her. Looking ahead to 2023, Jada writes,
“I’ve learned to rise above the waters that overwhelm me and take a breath. Although this is something that I am still working on, I believe that you only start to reach your full potential when you take a moment to reflect and reset.”
